this morning i did something damn embarrassing. i was in the lift, and the door was about to close when a woman and her grandson came running towards our lift. being the nice the person that i am... i tried to hold the door open for them. but in my excitement of being a good samaritan, i kept pressing on the 'close door' button.

now i must confess.. i always get confused when the buttons esp when they are the arrow kind. you know '><' and '<>' that kind? (this has lead me to believe that i have a mild case of dylexsia)

so there i was frantically pressing on the 'door close' button and wondering what the hell is wrong with the lift... thinking to myself.. is the lift that stupid?! and while i was doing that, the small kid kept trying to stick his foot in. so cos he tried to stick his foot in, the door wld open and i wld then press on the 'door close' button and the door would keep closing.. this went on for like 2 mins lah.. and the cute lil boy kept shouting 'oi! oi! oi! oi!' hahahaha damn cute..

of cos there were pple in the lift.. and this guy beside me stuck his hand out but not before giving me this 'what the hell u doing' look. it was then did i realised that i was pressing on the wrong button all the time. ~_~ for the rest of the lift ride, i didn't bother pressing anything.

which brings me to this point.... some pple are damn bloody inconsiderate. esp pple staying in my blk. it is obvious that when a person comes into the lift, both hands filled with stuff, he/she is unable to press the lift button of her/his floor. the as a neighbour, you shd help. but obviously.. some pple just press their buttons and then just stand woodenly in from the of the button panel. ~_~ even if you don't want to help other pple press their lift button at least move aside lah. that being said, it is of cos only my personal expectation. expectations are bad things because you can't really impose them on pple. and when u have certain expectations that pple don't live up to, it makes u irritated or pissed. ~_~ then again, it is only common courtesy which sadly to say, a lot of singaporeans lack. (i dunno why the gahmen bother about the 'being gracious' campaign.. it obviously hasn't worked)

i think all singaporeans shd be enrolled into like basic courtesy classes (that includes lift etiquette or maybe even sms etiquette) .. as well as a class that teaches them how to WALK PROPERLY. singaporeans obviously walk like how they drive.

on a sidenote: everyone is bound by social convention no matter how you try to be an individual. manners are a social convention so unless you're thinking of becoming a barbarian (going back to the prehistoric days and being uncivilised) you are definitely bound by social convention. which brings me to the point that how civilised a person is depends on how much she/he subcribes to social conventions... which is ironic cos everyone wants to be civilised while some are vehemently rejecting certain social conventions.
